Getting Fancy at Pan'Ris

My friends and I were invited to Pan’Ris for dinner this evening, and minus a few issues which if addressed, can be a great new addition to the Aylanto-classed eateries.

We chose to sit out on the deck, as the weather is as we all know, beautiful during the evening. It’s a lovely place, with a staircase handy leading off it to the main entrance. I have to say, the place is beautifully done.

The order comprised of a Seafood Chowder, Red Snapper with Saffron Sauce, Grilled Lobster, Dijon Steak with a baked potato, and the Smoked Turkey Spaghetti which was originally in a creamy sauce, but they were kind enough to switch it a marinara sauce, as per my friend’s request. For dessert, we ordered the Bread and Butter Pudding and a Blueberry Cheesecake. Our server was polite, efficient at order taking and attentive without being obstructive. We were informed our food would arrive within 20-25 minutes.

The chowder arrived within 10-15 minutes, and during that interval, we were served garlic bread, which was as garlic bread should be. Although if it is served within baskets instead of platters, it won’t get cold so quickly. Other wise it was good, buttery, garlicky garlic bread.

While I enjoyed the flavor of the chowder, it’s consistency was watery, and all it had were shredded prawns. As observed by my friends and I, a chowder should be thickened with potatoes, with healthy servings of calamari, fish and chunks of prawn. I did however, enjoy it.

Moving on to the mains, it took 50, I kid you not, 50 minutes for the food to arrive. 2 tables who arrived after us were served food before us, fer cryin’ out loud! My friend Hassan’s opinion about the red snapper he ate was, and I quote, ‘I lovvveeedddd it’. We both agreed there was no hint of the fishy smell which usually accompanies most seafood. The fish was flaky, tender, perfectly grilled. The sauce I felt was skimped out a bit, and could have done with a bit more. The pasta was also very good, albeit a bit too spicy. Go a little easy on the mirchi, and it’s a hit. The lobster was requested with a risotto rice which was a bit dry, unfortunately. Again with the lobster, I wish they had served more sauce. The lobster itself however, wasn’t cooked to death and the flavor of the meat was actually pretty good. Moving on to the steak. Now, you can get a well done, medium rare and rare down easy. Getting it to medium is a bit tricky. It has to be pink in the middle and juicy throughout. The steak was a more than decent size, very filling and the perfect cut. The sear on the crust was perfection. The grill though, was medium rare to rare. Now while my friend Ali and I absolutely loved the ‘doneness’ of the steak, we agreed that someone else might probably call it kacha and send it back to the kitchen. The baked potato was cold, but served with a healthy dollop of sour cream. And who doesn’t love sour cream?

Now the desserts. I mean, just look at them. Loookkkkk! If you have read my reviews, you know one of my pet peeves is a soft cheesecake crust. This cheesecake satiates in ways rarely found in this city. The crust was crispy, yet buttery. The cheesecake itself was the good stuff, not over salted, not overly sweetened. The sweetness came from the blueberry compote on top. Absolutely beautiful harmony of crunchy, soft and sweet. The bread and butter pudding was warm, soft, ooey gooey caramalley goodness with a scoop of good old vanilla. That was demolished. Finished. Fin. Gone. Demolished within seconds. I could make a meal of the desserts and come back happy.

The management was very happy to hear our feedback and we were very happy to be there. I wish. Pan’Ris all the best.

Mandi House, Grand Launch

I'll be real with you. I have actually never really been fond of mandi. Pulao with tender meat pieces is something I was born eating. I didn't understand the fuss about it. You know how different food fads have trended wherever you live? Chinese, Pan Asian, burgers, Continental cuisines area all different from the local palate. Pulao aur boti toh mai ghar pe bhi kha sakti hun. So I never got on to the mandi house fad. And the servings at these places are huge, bordering on wasteful. I wasn't going to go there with just one or two friends to eat mandi. No Sirree Bob. Mandis are meant for at least 3-5 people to enjoy, depending on hunger levels. Recently I was invited to the grand launch of the new Mandi House on main Shaheed-e-Millat's now populated restaurant strip. The place was easy to find since it's so prominently visible from the main road. The restaurant itself is made really well, with a waiting area and seating space on both floors. Options for dining in ...

Golden Dragonization

I’ve always loved desi Chinese food. I’ve been raised on desi Chinese food. The more sweetish side of things, with so many spices that one’s left wondering whether to eat or wipe one’s nose or eat one’s food. But oh, so good.  Thus, I convinced the family to order Golden Dragon tonight, even though they were most reluctant to order from a new place. Since my father and I are both allergic to ajino moto, we requested that no ajino moto be added in our food. Stuck to the basics, since it was my first time ordering. We ordered the hot and sour soup, hot and spicy wontons, crispy beef, hot and spicy chicken, chicken in oyster sauce, and vegetable fried rice. The first thing we got to open was the wontons. All the food was steaming, amazingly hot. Since Abu was in the kitchen with me, the first thing he did was make a face and say, ‘Aye hai! Steamed wontons hamaray matlab k thori hain.’ I took a bite, then forced him to take a bite. When I raised my eyebrows at him in quest...

Almost a Year Later at RAK's Table

Hello darkness, my old friend! While I know that blogposts aren't exactly the preferred social media communication method nowadays, something keeps pulling me back to this baby of mine that I can't seem to let go of, even though last I posted was September 4, 2024.  I also feel like this particular culinary experience of mind deserved a blogpost of its own, it was THAT good! It wasn't just the food, but the company with which I enjoyed each morsel, which came about thanks to my foodie friend Sadia Safdar, who kindly thought of me when Rida Alam Khan, head chef at Yazu and RAK's Table requested a taste-testing of some choice dishes from her yet-to-be-opened restaurant. The panel consisted of OG food lovers, not just bloggers, but people who genuinely have a passion for food and can taste the nuanced notes and secret ingredients in perfectly crafted recipes.  Considering I had never been to Yazu, I was quite impressed by the entrance, very tasteful, just like the food as...
