A Pastry Soiree

Disclaimer: This is going to be a 3-in-1 review which I'll try to keep as brief as possible, but don't count on it.  A few months ago, I was invited to a taste testing of a few desserts made by a friend's friend. The friendship was instant as was the love for her desserts. A few weeks later, we met up again and all of us encouraged her to start up her own business from home. Seeing all the encouragement, my friend decided to give it a go.  I am very happy to introduce A Pastry Soiree ( Facebook page ) which boasts a wide variety of desserts, the entire list of which you'll find once you click on the link provided. I only promote this venture after I have tried several of her desserts,  The first of which are the white chocolate blondies, which are the perfect brownies, soft and gooey on the inside, yet sturdy enough that they don't break when you bite into them, and dotted throughout with white chocolate. I loved them and I'm not even fond of white c

Amazing Thai-The Old And The New

Ever since I first started using Amazing Thai, I've pretty much become a regular client. The last time I treated myself to their goodies was in October, with a large basket of some staples such as the Mama ramen and Pocky sticks. Fast forward almost 2 months later, I come home from work to some complimentary yummies courtesy Amazing Thai. Why? Because I hadn't ordered in a while and they missed me. Amazing customer service, isn't it? So as you can see from the pictures, these were no samples but full size packages of Poco's caramel popcorn and Samui coconut chips. The coconut chips were already a favorite. Sweet, crispy and perfect to satiate the munchies. Fun fact, toddlers love this stuff. Tested and tried on at toddlers aged two and above. The caramel popcorn is perfect for movie nights at home. I mean, you could share it with one other person, but I don't share my food so all mine. Amazing Thai, keep up the amazing customer service!

Whole Slice-The New King of Pizza

Here's a fun fact-Whole Slice is the brainchild of the Evergreen owners. Most people in Karachi who are into healthy eating know about Evergreen. Just like their Evergreen line, the owners created Whole Slice with the claim of making it the smart way of eating pizza, without compromising on quality. No surprise there, considering I loved the sandwiches, but didn't feel the Rs. 150 delivery charge justified the sandwich I tried ( Blog here ). Fun fact, I have to pay Rs. 100 delivery charges for Whole Slice as well. Is it worth the price? Read on to find out! One evening I was craving a pizza, but wanted to try something new. Tapping into good ol' Google, I found Whole Slice, an app I simply needed to download and order my pizza through. Taking a risk since I wasn't too hangry, I went ahead and downloaded it. The app itself is easy to navigate, and has ten choices to take your pick from, including a 'Build Your Own' option, which is awesome for the particular p

Baba Biryani-The Best Biryani in Town?

Sundays are amazing, magical days of sleeping and eating. This particular Sunday was made even more magical with my waking up to biryani from a new place called Baba Biryani. Claiming to be made with fresh ingredients in hygienic conditions, which is still left to be determined since I haven't seen the premise where its made, it's definitely delicious, and one of the best tasting biryanis I've had outside the house. And I'm very fussy about my biryani. It has to be spicy, the rice has to be khila khila and the chicken/meat has to be tender. Baba Biryani followed through on all counts. The masala was perfect, the rice was of good quality, the meat was tender and the potatoes were soft and fluffy. There was a bit too much oil for my liking, but not so much that I was unable to eat it. I tried both the chicken and the beef biryanis. The chicken was slightly less spicy, but still pretty good. The beef biryani was my favorite. Slightly more spicier than the chicken birya

Wingitt-The House of Wings

I love chicken wings. I love them in all sizes, no discrimination. Some like them really big, some like them boneless. Me, I enjoy them all. Give them to me coated in Buffalo sauce, and I'll be one happy girl. I stumbled upon Wingitt quite by accident, when I went to pick up flowers from Just Flowers next door (A beautiful little flower shop with an amazing variety, by the way). It's a little shop, nothing to boast of, but has made the most of its space. Spotlessly clean, there is a small seating area, with cute red metal buckets serving as napkin holders and a small bottle of Dettol hand sanitizer on each table. Wingitt has a large variety of sauces to go along with the classic and boneless wings it serves, the details of which I will go into in a bit. There are also sides such as wedges, chicken strips and a variety of fries which I have yet to try. You can get 4, 8, 16 or 24 wings with a choice of 1 or 4 flavors. There are also different combos, which don't have bon

Amazing Thai's Eid Goodies

Eid comes with its blessings in different forms. I got Eidi from Amazing Thai this year, and I was so glad I did! A cute basket filled with delicious Thai goodies, and even though I enjoyed them all, a few really stood out. Let's share what was in the basket first: 1. Tom Yum Kung flavored Pretz, thin biscuits with a distinct salty, spicy and prawn flavor. 2. Then Pocky, banana and vanilla chocolate flavored thin biscuit sticks. 3. Coconut chips, which my mom and khala enjoyed more than I did, 4. An unbranded baggie of salty, sweet and sour tamarind which I shared with my mom because she really likes that stuff. I did too, but my throat would've had to pay the consequences had I eaten all of it *Shakes fist at tonsils* 5. Salty crispy peas which are absolutely delicious and I'm still munching on them. 6. A small bag of sunflower seeds which I loved sharing with my mom, khala and sister. Out of all these, my favorites where the Banana and Vanilla Pocky, thin bisc

Dragonfly Kitchen Goodies

There are very few eateries I have been loyal to over the years. One of the places which has always been consistent in its quality and quantity is Dragonfly's Kitchen. It makes my heart so happy when I see a deserving establishment grow and expand, and that's exactly what Dragonfy has been doing. Having begun stocking its sandwich variety at Agha's supermarket, Dragonfly Kitchen is beginning to get the recognition it truly deserves. For this month, promotional code is available in all DFK sandwiches, availing which will get you a lovely DFK mug! And I was lucky enough to get a mug as well. With a large variety to choose from (Hunter's Pride, Caesar's Chick, Cheesey Crunch, Egg-Stravaganza and Tuna-Rama), it's easy to buy a sandwich suitable for your flavor profile. If you don't have time to cook, you can buy the Egg-Stravaganza for breakfast, Tuna-Rama for lunch and Caesar's Chick for dinner. And with the choices available, you don't have to w

Nutrilov Love

Team Nutrilov got in touch with me a little over a week ago asking if I would like to try their products. Since I've been on a health kick anyway, I decided to try them out. Now, these aren't protein bars. They're more appropriately termed as 'healthy snack bars', and if you love sweet, oatey goodness, you're in for a treat. These bars can be delivered to you anywhere in Karachi. All you have to do is inbox  here  with your name, address, phone number and of course, your order and Team Nutrilov will get you what you need. Now the packaging, as you can see is very cute. Comes with a handwritten note as well, and my love for those has been mentioned a few times. I received 2 flavors, peanut butter and raisins (PB&R) and chocolate chip and coconut (CC&C). While it was advised to have them cold, I tried them at room temperature and refrigerated. And somehow, the flavors were better at room temperature for the PB&R, while the CC&

Where Customers Aren't Wanted

So I've been writing reviews and blogs for a long time now. And never have I ever written a negative review for anyone because I firmly believe I don't have the right to hurt anyone's business. I have been so firm in this practice that I have often been labeled as a 'bought blogger', someone who is paid to write positive reviews (I wish! I wouldn't have to work 2 jobs then). This recent experience however, takes the cake. Literally! I have waited a week to write this review just so that I could recall it objectively and without that hot flush of anger that comes when a paying customer is disrespected by a home-based caterer. Now I'll be honest with you, there have of course been situations where the food is so unpalatable that I haven't been able to consume it, but I have spoken directly to the owners of the establishments and left it up to them to decide how to proceed further. There has even been a situation where a home-based baker actually forgot

Chop Chop Wok-Upping the Ante

Chop Chop Wok, the not-so-new kid on the block was visited when it first opened its doors to Karachi. After giving my feedback to one of the owners, somehow the chance to return didn't reappear until a week ago when my sister and brother in-law were visiting from Lahore. Not sure about where to catch an early dinner at 7:30, I threw out Chop Chop Wok's name casually, thinking my sisters would reject it saying, 'Noooo, we don't feel like eating that!'. Surprisingly, the idea was welcomed by all so off we went. Now, apart from a few select places there are very few where everything goes perfect. Since we were in the early birds category, we found seating immediately on arrival. The staff was extremely welcoming and friendly, and we were served menus immediately after being seated. Since I was full, I didn't order anything. My brother in-law only wanted something light so he ordered the Thai Beef Salad, one sister ordered the Thai Red Curry and the young

Sakura's Octopus

When the love for food has crossed geographical and cultural boundaries, you know your love for food comes firsts. Having recently been invited to the launch of Sakura's new menu at PC Hotel, I didn't have any problem in going there right after work! The new array of sushis on the menu are exciting and inventive, definitely great work done by Chef June and the rest of the Sakura team. Out of all the kinds I tried, I have to say the octopus and squid were the most different. If you've never tried octopus and are squeamish about it, don't worry. I've tasted it for you.  There is no flavor as such in octopus tentacles, in fact I found it quite ordinary. Nothing seafoody or fishy about it. The texture however, is a different story. It was like nothing I've ever tried before. It was chewy, and yet it was easy to swallow, the meat had a little bite to it, kind of like al dente pasta, but thicker. Definitely interesting. The squid, and I have to say that squid

Ice Cream Roll-Ups

I'm sure anyone who lives in Karachi has seen the small colorful kiosk called Roll Ups outside Agha's (Shout out to Umais Khatri for making it!). Of course, I do realize this kiosk has been there awhile but I never really stopped to actually try out. A week ago I decided to stop by the kiosk and give it a try for myself, especially since I had been hearing friends rave about how nice this ice cream was. Why is Roll Ups so different from other ice creams, you ask? Simply because this specific ice cream is made on a block of ice, and not crazy expensive either. Was it as good as people said, you ask? Yes, it was! Going for the peanut butter flavor, the ice cream was made with 3 ingredients right before my eyes. Milk, chocolate syrup and of course, peanut butter. The taste was exactly what was in the ice cream. Creamy, chocolate peanut butter. And for the price, which I think was 200-something rupees, the quantity and quality were more than reasonable. The best part is tha

Studio Cupcake's Sweetness

When Studio Cupcake found out my sister had a baby girl, she was kind enough to send over the sweetest cookies I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. She knows how to get the sweetness of the cookie and the frosting balanced enough so that the frosting on top is most of the sweetness and cookie is vanilla goodness. Even after a week, the cookies were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Didn't get soggy at all. The cookies were sweet of course, but not as sweet as the wonderful gesture you see in the picture. Thank you, Studio Cupcake! Love the love <3 div="">

A'Mews'ing Experience

Mews - Wholesome Kitchen, a place where the entire family enjoyed their meal. With everyone being indecisive, my sister and I decided upon Mews since the parents and chacha hadn't been there till now. Since we got there around 8, the place was thankfully relatively empty. We chose to sit outside because the patio is oh so pretty, and the weather is too. For the appetizers we went with the trio of fries and the hot stuff plank pizza. The pizza was delivered as promised. Hot, cheesy, spicy goodness that everyone enjoyed and polished off. A great starter for the table. Thank God Mews makes their own fries and doesn't use the frozen variety. I loved all three flavors (Truffle and mushroom, kimchi and bolognese) but my favorite was definitely the kimchi. Since I had already stuffed myself silly earlier when I was out with a friend, I chose to not order a main course. I did however, order a mint lemonade. My chacha and dad decided to split the club sandwich, for the mot

New York Coffee: To The Rescue!

When you can't get into the Karachi Eat Festival because the traffic is insane (Starting from Metropole), you circle around 4 times looking for space, can't find it and decide it's just not worth the hassle, you end up deciding not to waste the outing and go somewhere peaceful instead. With all of Karachi at the Karachi Eat Festival, Zamzama was peaceful and full of free parking. Let's get the bad out of the way first. Why oh why would you mess with perfection, NYC? The crust was soggy, the cheesecake itself too sweet, and overall quite disappointing. The manager present told me the new formula cheesecake had just been imported and my first reaction was, 'WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?' Put in a request a to bring the old version back. Sigh. The good parts however, are the coffee and the sample platter. Delivered as I asked for, double shot espresso, frothy, creamy delicious coffee goodness. My friend enjoyed his hot chocolate, but I didn't taste it. T
