Bahria Town, Istanbul Grill; No Trace of Turkey

A few weeks ago, my friend and I went to Bahria Town, Karachi and somehow ended up at Istanbul Grill. We were all hangry and unsure about trying out this particular eatery, because the menu had a lot of Pakistani food mixed in with the Turkish. We would have moved on and tried something else had the owner/manager not persuaded us to stay. To sweeten the deal, he said the food was on the house if we didn't like it (before you come for me, we didn't take him up on that offer and paid fully) and that we could give our honest review online, which is finally here.

We went entirely with the suggestions given by the staff, and ordered the following:

- Afghani Pulao: Didn't have it but the others said it was okay

- Istanbul Boti: I didn't understand what was so Turkish about this. The boti itself reeked of that meaty smell which people, myself included find unpleasant. It was also a little dry and I couldn't eat more than one piece.

- Kelash Kabab: This was probably worse than the Istanbul Boti because there was a legit metallic flavor to the kabab. When we asked the owner/manager, he said the foil it was served in was greased with butter and cooked in it. We still don't understand what kind of foil they're using which imparts an unpleasant flavor to the food being cooked inside it.

- Kashmiri Handi: This was probably the best thing we ate there, even though there was absolutely nothing Kashmiri about this dish. I should know, I am a Kashmiri. We don't slather cheese into a makhni handi and call it Kashmiri *eye roll*

- Naan: This was your average naan, nothing spectacular.

There was one other dish which was recommended and never served, so that was cancelled from the bill without our perusal, thank the Lord.

Was the total damage worth the food? I came away feeling like I wasted my calories on a meal I didn't really enjoy, but the amount paid wasn't crazy insane. Would I go there again? Nooooo thank you.

Golden Dragonization

I’ve always loved desi Chinese food. I’ve been raised on desi Chinese food. The more sweetish side of things, with so many spices that one’s left wondering whether to eat or wipe one’s nose or eat one’s food. But oh, so good.  Thus, I convinced the family to order Golden Dragon tonight, even though they were most reluctant to order from a new place. Since my father and I are both allergic to ajino moto, we requested that no ajino moto be added in our food. Stuck to the basics, since it was my first time ordering. We ordered the hot and sour soup, hot and spicy wontons, crispy beef, hot and spicy chicken, chicken in oyster sauce, and vegetable fried rice. The first thing we got to open was the wontons. All the food was steaming, amazingly hot. Since Abu was in the kitchen with me, the first thing he did was make a face and say, ‘Aye hai! Steamed wontons hamaray matlab k thori hain.’ I took a bite, then forced him to take a bite. When I raised my eyebrows at him in quest...

Almost a Year Later at RAK's Table

Hello darkness, my old friend! While I know that blogposts aren't exactly the preferred social media communication method nowadays, something keeps pulling me back to this baby of mine that I can't seem to let go of, even though last I posted was September 4, 2024.  I also feel like this particular culinary experience of mind deserved a blogpost of its own, it was THAT good! It wasn't just the food, but the company with which I enjoyed each morsel, which came about thanks to my foodie friend Sadia Safdar, who kindly thought of me when Rida Alam Khan, head chef at Yazu and RAK's Table requested a taste-testing of some choice dishes from her yet-to-be-opened restaurant. The panel consisted of OG food lovers, not just bloggers, but people who genuinely have a passion for food and can taste the nuanced notes and secret ingredients in perfectly crafted recipes.  Considering I had never been to Yazu, I was quite impressed by the entrance, very tasteful, just like the food as...

Forty4 Obsessed

What can I say? I love Forty4. And why wouldn’t I when the team, from Aman to the chefs, are willing to go out of their way to recreate an item no longer available on their menu? I had been craving Kampong rice from Forty4 and mentioned it to Aman the last se last time I visited.  When I called to make reservations the other day, Aman was kind enough to call me back because he remembered my craving! He then went to trouble to check with the kitchen and then texted me a confirmation that one of my favorite yummies will be ready for me! And that’s not all. Once I was served my requested dinner, he came by to ask if it was the same as I remembered it. And yes, it was!  I had already been told jasmine rice is no longer stocked, which had originally been used, and I was perfectly happy just the same. I mean, puri zindagi wohi chaawal khaye hain na? Ab ziada hi-fi honay ki zaroorat nahin hai, ‘kay? Although I was tempted to polish off my entire meal, there was an event I w...
