Perfection at The Patio

Way back when The Patio initially opened its doors to Karachi, I suggested it to my sister and brother in-law for dinner, but never got around to visiting it myself. Thanks to a dear friend (You know who you are!) I finally found out what I had been missing out on!
The interior itself is cozy, comfortable and inviting. We chose to sit by the French doors, which gave us a lovely view into the patio outside. The staff seemed well-trained, and informed of all the items on the menu. The Specials menu was also pointed out, which I took advantage of, and ordered the Lobster Lasagna for myself.
But I move ahead of myself. The complimentary bread basket was standard as far as bread baskets go. No complaints there. It was fresh, with its usual bread sticks and buns. The butter with it was perfectly soft at room temperature, with a smattering of herbs and salt. Spread it on a bun and munched happily.
I was going to order the Pumpkin and Prawn Bisque, but my friend suggested the cheese fondue instead, to which I happily agreed since I was starving. When the fondue came with its assortment of vegetables and breads, I thought to myself about canceling the Lobster Lasagna because the fondue is a massive serving for two, and a meal in itself. It was cheesy, warm, slightly spiced and we took our time with it, since we were alternating between eating and talking. Halfway through the fondue, our server suggested he take the fondue back to the kitchen to warm it up, and that is the kind of service I am always impressed by. Please note that I was too hungry to think of taking pictures of the fondue at the time. My apologies. I suppose you'll just have to go and try it for yourself.
My friend was a smart cookie and ordered a light mains, the Grilled Prawns, which I would find out how they would taste later, and they were sensational. Didn't have that particular smell of seafood that always puts me off, juicy, succulent morsels of jumbo prawns with a lemony zing that perfectly compliments seafood.
The Lobster Lasagna was perfection. The layers were clearly defined, and not a hodgepodge mess. One could clearly see the cheese, lasagna strips, generous lobster chunks, creamed spinach, followed by another layer of lasagna strip and repeat.  It was a delightfully decadent confection, rich in flavor and strong in taste of all the elements, perfected by the fresh salad on the side with a lemon vinaigrette and 2 garlic bread pieces. I was of course, correct in my assumption that I couldn't possibly have finished my main after that fondue and I was right. So I did the most obvious thing; had it parceled and ate it for breakfast the next day. And it was somehow better the next morning, I suppose because the flavors had a chance to merge and marry together.
Now, going to The Patio and not tasting their famed desserts would have been criminal. So I rallied myself up to the task, and ordered the Naughty Toffee. And it was just what everyone makes it out to be. Sweet, caramelly, almost pudding-like in texture with that crunchy caramel on top, it wasn't too too sweet, but the perfect balance of salty and sweet. I don't know how they did it, but it was the perfect end to a perfect meal.
The Patio is a place I look forward to frequenting and trying out more of their food!

Mandi House, Grand Launch

I'll be real with you. I have actually never really been fond of mandi. Pulao with tender meat pieces is something I was born eating. I didn't understand the fuss about it. You know how different food fads have trended wherever you live? Chinese, Pan Asian, burgers, Continental cuisines area all different from the local palate. Pulao aur boti toh mai ghar pe bhi kha sakti hun. So I never got on to the mandi house fad. And the servings at these places are huge, bordering on wasteful. I wasn't going to go there with just one or two friends to eat mandi. No Sirree Bob. Mandis are meant for at least 3-5 people to enjoy, depending on hunger levels. Recently I was invited to the grand launch of the new Mandi House on main Shaheed-e-Millat's now populated restaurant strip. The place was easy to find since it's so prominently visible from the main road. The restaurant itself is made really well, with a waiting area and seating space on both floors. Options for dining in ...

Golden Dragonization

I’ve always loved desi Chinese food. I’ve been raised on desi Chinese food. The more sweetish side of things, with so many spices that one’s left wondering whether to eat or wipe one’s nose or eat one’s food. But oh, so good.  Thus, I convinced the family to order Golden Dragon tonight, even though they were most reluctant to order from a new place. Since my father and I are both allergic to ajino moto, we requested that no ajino moto be added in our food. Stuck to the basics, since it was my first time ordering. We ordered the hot and sour soup, hot and spicy wontons, crispy beef, hot and spicy chicken, chicken in oyster sauce, and vegetable fried rice. The first thing we got to open was the wontons. All the food was steaming, amazingly hot. Since Abu was in the kitchen with me, the first thing he did was make a face and say, ‘Aye hai! Steamed wontons hamaray matlab k thori hain.’ I took a bite, then forced him to take a bite. When I raised my eyebrows at him in quest...

Almost a Year Later at RAK's Table

Hello darkness, my old friend! While I know that blogposts aren't exactly the preferred social media communication method nowadays, something keeps pulling me back to this baby of mine that I can't seem to let go of, even though last I posted was September 4, 2024.  I also feel like this particular culinary experience of mind deserved a blogpost of its own, it was THAT good! It wasn't just the food, but the company with which I enjoyed each morsel, which came about thanks to my foodie friend Sadia Safdar, who kindly thought of me when Rida Alam Khan, head chef at Yazu and RAK's Table requested a taste-testing of some choice dishes from her yet-to-be-opened restaurant. The panel consisted of OG food lovers, not just bloggers, but people who genuinely have a passion for food and can taste the nuanced notes and secret ingredients in perfectly crafted recipes.  Considering I had never been to Yazu, I was quite impressed by the entrance, very tasteful, just like the food as...
