This or That?

I had recently read a few positive reviews of a new delivery place called This or That. The name is concise, catchy, cute. But was the food itself worth the calories? I intended to find out, because this is a model based on Whole Slice. Delivery-based app, no calls and no hassle of explaining directions. Also, burgers and pizza are a weakness. I'm always on the lookout for a good burger and pizza place, and this promised to be a 2-in-1. This being burgers and that being pizza, I presume.

Last week I was craving a good burger and decided to download the app and give the 'this' in This or That a try. App was downloaded as easily as most are, and I logged in. Scrolled down to check out all the products and then attempted to scroll back up to the top. I couldn't. My poor thumb hasn't gotten this much exercise ever. I switched to my index finger and attempted to scroll up again. I couldn't. Scrolling up really shouldn't be 'this' hard. So I refreshed the page and half the menu disappeared. I just couldn't find the burgers. They were gone, poof into thin air. Being my tenacious self, I called for placing an order and got through on the second ring. Turned out, they were out of burgers. None of 'this' for me that night.

So I called OMG and enjoyed my Gouda burger. You know those food shots where the cheese is all stringy and gooey and oozes out of the burger as you break it apart? That's what happened with mine when I took the first bite. Party in my mouth, hunger sated, and I got leftovers for breakfast the next day because OMG burgers are gloriously huge.

A few days later, I decided to give the This or That app another go, and once again the same scrolling problem. This time around, they were nice enough to mention they were out of burgers on the app. I deleted the app that night and decided I'll give it another try once it has some time to settle down and work out the app bugs. Unfortunately, that wasn't meant to happen.

My sister decided she wanted to try the pizza from This or That yesterday night. So being the good older sister that I am, I downloaded the app once more with fingers crossed in the hopes it would work. Third time wasn't the charm here. Once again no burgers, but I did build my own pizza because I love that option with Whole Slice. Got a 19 inch pie, classic sauce because I didn't know how hot their hot sauce would be so didn't risk it, with chicken fajita, onions, capsicum, jalapenos and mushrooms as my toppings. The total cost was Rs. 1954, higher than all the other pizza options available. Now I'm not averse to paying more than usual for exceptionally good food, And despite my previous experiences, I had high hopes for this pizza.

I should've known the pizza wasn't my type when my dad didn't outright say he didn't like it. He loves Pizza Hut's thick crust greasiness. and I prefer a thin, dry whole wheat crust. Now the ingredients used in this pizza are top notch, I'll give it that. Heavy on the chicken, vegetables and mushrooms (No, mushrooms aren't vegetables, they're a fungus). The cheese wasn't Adams, thank the Lord, and the crust was nicely seasoned with oregano.

I'm glad I didn't order the hot sauce because the classic one was pretty hot. Halfway into the pizza my mouth started burning and nose started running. Great for my sinus! I don't mind spicy food, in fact my tolerance for spice is quite high. But if you're selling the sauce as a classic then make it the classic way. The base of the pizza was thicker than I prefer and oily. If that's the kind of crust you like, then you will enjoy the pizza, but it just wasn't my thing. I'd been hoping for a place where I could get my burger and pizza fix together, but I think I'll be sticking to Whole Slice and OMG for now. The app seriously needs work, it's much easier to call and place an order than struggle to scroll up when perusing the menu.

I wish This and That the best, but if you're selling just two things, then make sure they're available please. My experience won't make me a regular customer, but I know their product will retain customers if they maintain the quality of their ingredients.

Meet the Chaza Queen of Karachi and proud owner of Juniper Kitchens, Shama! I had the absolute pleasure of being invited to her home for a lunch that left me in awe of the versatility found in Burmese cuisine. While Shama herself isn't Burmese, her ancestors have had a long-standing history with visiting Burma and adapting their local cuisine into their home. For those of you who don't know, Shama offers catering services and has a devoted clientele for her home-based catering services named Juniper Kitchens. I visited Shama's beautiful home with my friend Lailumah Shah , where we were welcomed with a refreshing hibiscus drink and an assortment of snacks including roasted and salted nuts, dried mango, and spicy tamarind. After a while, the table was laid with an assortment of salads, appetizers and entrees that was too much food for just 2 people. We started with the green tea leaf salad, a spicy mix of crunchy, nutty notes and the subtle fragrance of top tier green tea. I...

Mandi House, Grand Launch

I'll be real with you. I have actually never really been fond of mandi. Pulao with tender meat pieces is something I was born eating. I didn't understand the fuss about it. You know how different food fads have trended wherever you live? Chinese, Pan Asian, burgers, Continental cuisines area all different from the local palate. Pulao aur boti toh mai ghar pe bhi kha sakti hun. So I never got on to the mandi house fad. And the servings at these places are huge, bordering on wasteful. I wasn't going to go there with just one or two friends to eat mandi. No Sirree Bob. Mandis are meant for at least 3-5 people to enjoy, depending on hunger levels. Recently I was invited to the grand launch of the new Mandi House on main Shaheed-e-Millat's now populated restaurant strip. The place was easy to find since it's so prominently visible from the main road. The restaurant itself is made really well, with a waiting area and seating space on both floors. Options for dining in ...

Golden Dragonization

I’ve always loved desi Chinese food. I’ve been raised on desi Chinese food. The more sweetish side of things, with so many spices that one’s left wondering whether to eat or wipe one’s nose or eat one’s food. But oh, so good.  Thus, I convinced the family to order Golden Dragon tonight, even though they were most reluctant to order from a new place. Since my father and I are both allergic to ajino moto, we requested that no ajino moto be added in our food. Stuck to the basics, since it was my first time ordering. We ordered the hot and sour soup, hot and spicy wontons, crispy beef, hot and spicy chicken, chicken in oyster sauce, and vegetable fried rice. The first thing we got to open was the wontons. All the food was steaming, amazingly hot. Since Abu was in the kitchen with me, the first thing he did was make a face and say, ‘Aye hai! Steamed wontons hamaray matlab k thori hain.’ I took a bite, then forced him to take a bite. When I raised my eyebrows at him in quest...
