Where Customers Aren't Wanted

So I've been writing reviews and blogs for a long time now. And never have I ever written a negative review for anyone because I firmly believe I don't have the right to hurt anyone's business. I have been so firm in this practice that I have often been labeled as a 'bought blogger', someone who is paid to write positive reviews (I wish! I wouldn't have to work 2 jobs then). This recent experience however, takes the cake. Literally! I have waited a week to write this review just so that I could recall it objectively and without that hot flush of anger that comes when a paying customer is disrespected by a home-based caterer. Now I'll be honest with you, there have of course been situations where the food is so unpalatable that I haven't been able to consume it, but I have spoken directly to the owners of the establishments and left it up to them to decide how to proceed further. There has even been a situation where a home-based baker actually forgot

Chop Chop Wok-Upping the Ante

Chop Chop Wok, the not-so-new kid on the block was visited when it first opened its doors to Karachi. After giving my feedback to one of the owners, somehow the chance to return didn't reappear until a week ago when my sister and brother in-law were visiting from Lahore. Not sure about where to catch an early dinner at 7:30, I threw out Chop Chop Wok's name casually, thinking my sisters would reject it saying, 'Noooo, we don't feel like eating that!'. Surprisingly, the idea was welcomed by all so off we went. Now, apart from a few select places there are very few where everything goes perfect. Since we were in the early birds category, we found seating immediately on arrival. The staff was extremely welcoming and friendly, and we were served menus immediately after being seated. Since I was full, I didn't order anything. My brother in-law only wanted something light so he ordered the Thai Beef Salad, one sister ordered the Thai Red Curry and the young

Sakura's Octopus

When the love for food has crossed geographical and cultural boundaries, you know your love for food comes firsts. Having recently been invited to the launch of Sakura's new menu at PC Hotel, I didn't have any problem in going there right after work! The new array of sushis on the menu are exciting and inventive, definitely great work done by Chef June and the rest of the Sakura team. Out of all the kinds I tried, I have to say the octopus and squid were the most different. If you've never tried octopus and are squeamish about it, don't worry. I've tasted it for you.  There is no flavor as such in octopus tentacles, in fact I found it quite ordinary. Nothing seafoody or fishy about it. The texture however, is a different story. It was like nothing I've ever tried before. It was chewy, and yet it was easy to swallow, the meat had a little bite to it, kind of like al dente pasta, but thicker. Definitely interesting. The squid, and I have to say that squid

Ice Cream Roll-Ups

I'm sure anyone who lives in Karachi has seen the small colorful kiosk called Roll Ups outside Agha's (Shout out to Umais Khatri for making it!). Of course, I do realize this kiosk has been there awhile but I never really stopped to actually try out. A week ago I decided to stop by the kiosk and give it a try for myself, especially since I had been hearing friends rave about how nice this ice cream was. Why is Roll Ups so different from other ice creams, you ask? Simply because this specific ice cream is made on a block of ice, and not crazy expensive either. Was it as good as people said, you ask? Yes, it was! Going for the peanut butter flavor, the ice cream was made with 3 ingredients right before my eyes. Milk, chocolate syrup and of course, peanut butter. The taste was exactly what was in the ice cream. Creamy, chocolate peanut butter. And for the price, which I think was 200-something rupees, the quantity and quality were more than reasonable. The best part is tha

Studio Cupcake's Sweetness

When Studio Cupcake found out my sister had a baby girl, she was kind enough to send over the sweetest cookies I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. She knows how to get the sweetness of the cookie and the frosting balanced enough so that the frosting on top is most of the sweetness and cookie is vanilla goodness. Even after a week, the cookies were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Didn't get soggy at all. The cookies were sweet of course, but not as sweet as the wonderful gesture you see in the picture. Thank you, Studio Cupcake! Love the love <3 div="">
